“Our duty is to get to the truth in this”.

For almost four decades, the disappearance of Sheila and Katherine Lyon remained one of the Washington region’s most heart-wrenching mysteries.

The girls walked to Wheaton Plaza (now Westfield Wheaton Mall) on March 25, 1975, but never returned home, Patch previously reported.

The special grand jury was first impaneled in October to assist investigators. Police have charged his nephew, Lloyd Welch Jr., with two counts of murder. Welch has been named as a person of interest in the investigation into the 1975 slaying of 12-year-old Sheila Lyon and 10-year-old Katherine Lyon.

All three defendants are relatives of Richard Welch, Krantz said.

They chatted at Stangee’s home in Bedford when Patricia came to court for her own perjury charge in June, but she said they did not talk about the case. His daughter has called the investigation a witch hunt.

Multiple media outlets report that a grand jury in Bedford County charged Leslie Engelking with perjury on Friday. All three have posted bond. The proceedings are closed to the public.

Capt. Darren Franke, head of the Major Crimes Unit of the Montgomery County Police, said previously that Parker, Richard Welch, Patricia Welch, and others will be investigated further.

Engelking, who is Richard Welch’s brother-in-law, and Welch-Johnson, who is Welch’s granddaughter, declined comment to The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1f1yzRG). Stangee could not be reached for comment.

Another person has been charged in the case of the missing Lyon sisters. Krantz declined to say specifically how they had impeded the investigation.

Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Frantz told media outlets that the three defendants charged on Friday either made false statements before the grand jury or obstructed police by making false statements. “In this case, the grand jury is not going to tolerate people lying to them on issues that are material to these proceedings that prevent us from getting to the truth”. Police took items from her home in Anne Arundel Co., MD last week, during a search for communication about the case. It was unclear what they took from the home.

On Friday, another associate of Welch’s was charged in the case.

Detectives went to speak with him. At least three relatives have implicated him, according to court records. Investigators suspect their remains were burned on Taylor’s Mountain in Bedford County.

The case revolves around Lloyd Welch, who was charged with abducting and killing the Lyon sisters back in 1975. He told detectives that he thinks the girls were the Lyon sisters, according to court records.
