“Paramilitary border policewomen saw terrorists armed with knives stabbing a man”, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said.
Video footage showed a passerby with a metal bar beating one of the Palestinians lying on the ground after he had been shot.
Two young Palestinian men aged 20 and 21 started stabbing bystanders outside the Jaffa gate of Jerusalem’s old city, just after midday (local time). Palestinian security sources said the attacker’s body was with Israeli authorities and they were not yet able to identify him.
Twenty-one Israelis have now been killed, majority in stabbings and shooting attacks by Palestinians.
According to figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry, Thursday’s deaths bring the total number of Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces since October 1 to 134, including 26 minors and six women.
The two victims are fully conscious and receiving medical treatment at the scene and are being prepared to be transferred to hospital for further treatment.
The attack comes as revelers are set to gather in the West Bank city of Bethlehem for Christmas celebrations.
One of them was killed immediately and the other later succumbed to his wounds, police and paramedics said.
Israel says the violence stems from a Palestinian campaign of incitement. Later in the day another of the three, Ofer Ben ari, 46, passed away having suffered gunshot wounds from Israeli police who were attempting to neutralize the terrorists.

Also Wednesday, the Israeli Shin Bet intelligence agency said it had uncovered “a wide terrorist infrastructure” of the militant Islamic group Hamas in the West Bank and Israel, directed from Gaza. One of their bullets may have accidentally caused the second Israeli fatality.
