3-magnitude quake hits Philippines’ Mindanao island

The quake was not expected to cause a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

RESIDENTS on the island of Mindanao in Southern Philippines received a rude shock early Saturday morning when an quake rattled several areas in the region, various reports said. As per the USGS website, the quake hit at latitude 6.579 degrees north and longitude 126.484 degrees east.

According to the US Geological Survey, the natural disaster was centered 114 km east of Davao. Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines’ seismic agency, said that though it was a powerful quake, its effects would be mitigated by location and depth.

He told DZMM radio station that but we do not expect significant damage.

In its preliminary impact assessment, the USGS said there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage from the tremor.

A milder aftershock was detected shortly after the first tremor, the institute said.

The quake occurred at 6:53 a.m. and was located 42 kilometers southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
