“President Park and I agreed that the entire worldwide community needs to implement these sanctions fully and hold North Korea accountable”, Obama said of the meeting with his South Korean counterpart.
“North Korea’s provocative actions are in clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions and must be directly challenged”, a Japanese government official quoted Abe as telling Park.
“We hope that the Security Council will be able to act unanimously and united in condemning this act of utter disrespect for worldwide law and for the resolutions for the Security Council”, Koro Bessho, Japanese Ambassador to the UN, told the press.
The United States, Japan and South Korea earlier called on the Security Council to speak out.
The program, being installed in South Korea, is a US anti-ballistic missile system created to shoot down North Korean missiles.
Park Geun-Hye showed his full support for U.S.’ plan to impose a set of sanctions for North Korea’s most recent actions. The 15-member Security Council toughened the sanctions in March in response to North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January and the launch of a long-range rocket in February.
Speaking alongside Power, South Korean ambassador Hahn Choong-hee also called on the worldwide community to send a message that if the North Koreans continue their behavior, “they will face much stronger and insurmountable and significant counter measures from the global community”. Park said she and Obama agreed to maintain a strong deterrence structure and that world powers will respond to North Korea’s actions “by utilizing all means”.
Kim supervised a drill by units “tasked to strike the bases of the USA imperialist aggressor forces in the Pacific operational theatre in a contingency”, KCNA news agency of Pyongyang said. They also required mandatory inspections of cargo leaving and entering North Korea by land, sea or air and a ban on all sales or transfers of small arms and light weapons to Pyongyang.
That flew 500 kilometers towards Japan, far exceeding the range of the country’s previous sub-launched missiles. Experts say they they were Scud-ER missiles, which have a range of about that distance.
USA and South Korean Presidents, Barack Obama and Parke Guen-hye also met Monday on the sidelines of ASEAN related summits in Vientiane, Laos.
But he added that Pyongyang’s current behaviour made that impossible.
