3 quarters of Spain played El Gordo Christmas lottery
Spaniards are taking advantage of unseasonably warm weather and a “day of reflection” break in political campaigning ahead of a general election to buy tickets for the world’s richest lottery.

Almost half of the winning tickets were bought by a high school in the nearby village of Laujar de Andarax, population 1,600, where they were resold by pupils trying to raise money for a school trip.
This year El Gordo has collected more than $3 billion, and is set to issue winnings of 2.2 billion euros ($ 2.4 billion). The odds of winning at least something are high.
The top winning number is usually sold in a number of different agencies, but went this time to just one in the southern beach town of Roquetas de Mar, where elated winners arrived and cracked open bottles of sparkling wine for a celebratory street party.
“I’m really happy and I congratulate all the winners”, Mayor Gabriel Amat told the Voz de Almeria newspaper.
“They went to workers who need it a lot”, she said “And to top it off, they were distributed by the kids”. Buyers can only pick from the numbers their vendor has available. “It’s very important for the town, especially in the hard times we’ve been facing”.
The winning numbers for a smaller Spanish lottery, called “el Nino”, will be announced January 6.
Standard tickets cost 20 euros.
The Gordo lottery first took place in Cádiz in 1812 and has not missed a year since, even continuing through Spain’s civil war between 1936 and 1939. Instead, the lottery was created to give as many people as possible a Christmas bonus with family and friends often sharing tickets. But that’s because he feels as if he already has won it, as the owner of the most-popular lottery office in the country of the biggest lottery players in the world.

Children carried on the tradition of singing the winning numbers and their corresponding prizes aloud as they were drawn at the hours-long, televised event in Madrid.
