Incidents of whale washing up the shore on Indian beaches have become a common phenomenon now.
The sheer size and wight of the mammal makes transporting and disposing the carcass a hard job for local authorities. Moreover, the administration lacks the expertise to preserve whale’s carcass.
The dead whale was first spotted by few joggers on the beach on late Thursday night, right behind the JW Marriott Hotel in the city. “It bloated and was then carried in by the tide to the beach”, Assistant Conservator of Forest said. This 30-foot whale washed up at the beach and was spotted at around 10 pm. Last year, a 42-feet-long blue whale washed up at Alibaugh near Mumbai, but died after efforts to push her back into the sea failed.
Forest officials had contacted marine biologists after spotting it when it was still alive and struggling to survive.
The reasons for this are not yet precisely known.
“The animal had no external injuries”, said Animesh Limaye, an expert from Reefwatch India.
