None more so than 18-year-old Marcus Rashford, who impressed after replacing Ibrahimovic at half-time in the 5-2 victory against Galatasaray but who knows he faces a battle to make the United first team.

Ibrahimovic became the Red Devils’ second summer signing last month as new manager Jose Mourinho moved quickly to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford ahead of his first season in charge.

“People were making that mistake [Blind would leave] very quick”, Blind is quoted as saying.

‘I can see a lot of smiles and a lot of enjoyment in the training sessions, which is good.

He told the official Manchester United website: “I think it’s good to have such competition within the squad because there are a lot of good players for every position in a big team. But I believe if you are confident and work hard that you will get chances”. It is good to have this joy and I can’t wait to start the season.

“There was one game, Cagliari v Inter, during which nothing was working – we were so bad it wasn’t easy to see that we were actually playing football”. He went on to praise the new manager and said, “I think every manager has his own ideas. But nothing was said and just like all the other guys I want to work very hard and get my spot in the team” says the Dutch player.

“Of course it was incredible to hear this from Mourinho and he said he will keep an eye on how I do this season”, the winger added.

“We are going to follow Ibra because we have one of the best players in the world and we have a big leader in our dressing room”.
