36 killed as bus falls in Purna River in Gujarat

The Gujarat government announced 400,000 rupees ($5,900) in compensation for the families of those killed. “At least 24 others are admitted to hospital for treatment”, senior administrative official Remya Mohan in Gujarat state told AFP.

The bus was on its way from Navsari to Songadh via Bardoli and was carrying number of students from schools and colleges of Navsari. Rescue operation is still on.

A packed passenger bus plunged off a bridge into a river in western India yesterday killing at least 37 people, an official said, in one of the deadliest road accidents in recent years.

Police said the number of casualties were being collated and may rise.

Police superintendent MS Bharada said: “Twenty bodies have been taken out from the river after the bus fell off a bridge into Purna river near Supa village”. May be the driver took a wrong turn and the bus plunged into the River Purna, she added.

The rescue team was called and people were taken out of the bus, people were severely injured and were rescued, This incident had occurred due to the overloaded of the bus the driver lost the control due to the overload the road had many ups and downs that lead to the unsafe incident said a person who was rescued and safe in the incident. Arrangements for flood lights have been made and the efforts to extricate those entrapped in the vehicle were still on.
