380 new cases of HIV infections from Jan-Oct this year

People in the Knoxville community and across the world on Tuesday remembered lives lost to HIV and AIDS and those who are now battling the disease.

There were 380 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections reported among Singapore residents in the first 10 months of this year, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) yesterday.

“HIV services are still not equipped to address the needs of older people and need to be more integrated in care systems for other chronic diseases”, said Rachel Albone, Health and Care Policy Advisor for HelpAge International. National AIDS Control Program has delivered remarkably in past 2 years, The Global Fund has agreed to extend support to National AIDS Control Program till 2017.

The event was hosted by the Frannie Peabody Center and was one of many around the country on World AIDS Day, which started in 1988 to raise awareness.

Here in the Desert Southwest Yuma United Church of Christ held a commemoration on behalf of those that are living with and have passed away with HIV or AIDS.

Health officials say the best prevention is abstinence and protection.

“I just hope that people, especially on world AIDS day, everybody goes out and gets tested, finds out their status, and then after that does what they’re supposed to do”, Smith said. “So some people would rather not know than be identified”, said Julia LaVere, prevention supervisor for ACR Health.

‘On this day, let us pay tribute to those whom HIV/AIDS took from us too soon, and let us recognize those who continue to fight for a world free from AIDS, ‘ he states.

Barry says the number of new infections in New York State has been dropping since 2002. AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
