The victims, all in their 20s, are reported to be from Massachusetts.
Family members found the victims, between the ages of 18 and 22, when they went to check on them.
Police arrived on scene at 8.30 p.m. and officers immediately suspected carbon monoxide poisoning and later ran tests.
The generator in the basement was powering a refrigerator, Gallant said.
Byron is located in Oxford County. “You never have a generator in the house”.
Gallant said he believes the victims had been dead for several days when they were found. The department has determined that the four arrived at the camp Tuesday afternoon. The cabin did not have electricity and the four did not shut off the generator in the basement before going to bed.
The identities of the dead, who were from Massachusetts, have yet to be released, he said.
