Four people were killed and 14 others injured on Sunday afternoon (Monday NZ Time) when a van caught fire in a crash with a pickup in a suburb of Washington, DC, authorities said. Five children and eight adults were hurt and are being treated at hospitals. While the incident is still being investigated by detectives, there are eight adults that are now in the hospital and four are in critical condition.
Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker said at an event in Annapolis that the crash was the worst in years in the county.
A police spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment Sunday evening but authorities said police investigators would be reconstructing the accident. He added late Sunday that authorities weren’t but releasing the names or the id of the church group and drivers concerned whereas family have been being notified.
“The fire just got bigger and bigger”, he told The Associated Press by phone.
He said that when the fire department arrived and brought the blaze under control, he could see them pulling bodies from the van. He said a few people ran out with kitchen firefighters “to try to get as close as they could, but it was a little too much”.
“Accidents like Chillum Road are hard for everyone”, Bashoor said on Twitter. White smoke billowed from the scene afterward. Most of the casualties involved people from the van, Brady said.
Photos taken by people nearby showed flames shooting into the air from the side of the passenger van. A pickup truck and a large passenger van that collided came to rest in front of a two-story brick house with three cars parked in front. The extent of the fire and other damage to the vehicles involved wasn’t immediately known. Meanwhile, 12 people were also injured because of the fiery crash while several are now in critical condition.

Santos said through a Spanish language translator that he rushed to the hospital after getting word of the crash and he spent most of Sunday night and all of Monday visiting with the injured members of his congregation.
