The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that none of the people in the two small aircraft survived the crashes, near the R.J. Donovan Correction Center.
The crash was reported around 11 a.m. about two miles northeast of the airport, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.
“When the first arriving units got on the scene, they reported two aircraft down, both fully involved with fire in the vegetation”, said Schuler.
Bolwerk says crews extinguished small fires sparked in dry brush at the crash site.
About two acres burned near where the Cessna crashed, Schuler said. Pieces of the Cessna were found in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. A Chula Vista firefighter was taken to the hospital with possible heat-related issues as the temperature soared above 100 degrees. Temperatures in the area were near 100 degrees, officials said.
Brown Field is just 1.5 miles from the U.S./Mexico border.
