Police officers got a call around 12:05 a.m. about someone breaking into a home in the 400 block of Saint Marys Parkway and stabbing several people, according to Buffalo Grove Deputy Chief Roy Bethge.

Witnesses told police that two masked attackers had broken in, and a man armed with a large hunting knife repeatedly stabbed the 49-year-old homeowner.

Police said the homeowner grabbed a handgun during the home invasion, and opened fire, chasing off the suspects. Two other male residents, a female resident and the family’s German shepherd were also stabbed.

Evidence was recovered from the vehicle the suspects were in, which linked them to the crime scene.

Police said three of the four victims have been treated and released from the hospital.

Police are questioning three people of interest but no charges have been filed. The homeowner remained hospitalized Wednesday morning, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening. The dog, which was wounded in the shoulder, was taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment. Investigators are working to determine a motive.
