4 teams are fighting for the final 2 National Football League playoff spots
“That’s a goal of ours”, wide receiver Danny Amendola said last week. A Denver win or tie versus San Diego means they win the AFC West and guarantee a first round bye.

Despite their first loss of the season – to the Falcons- the Panthers are NFC South champs with a first-round bye. They’ll be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed, and can remove all doubt by winning at Sun Life Stadium for the first time since December 2, 2012. A win would’ve set up a scenario of the Steelers needing nothing other than a win over the Browns to get into the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
With the regular season still yet to play itself out and the Bengals’ postseason foes unknown, excitement is still permeating through the team and Who Dey Nation.
Denver with Brock Osweiler isn’t going to get there, and Peyton Manning ranked No. 32 out of 32 National Football League quarterbacks when he was healthy over the first half of the season. If the Steelers reach the postseason, they’ll visit either the Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos or the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs.
Playoff Odds Movement: +12.4% Week 16 Result: Def. Cincinnati, 20-17 Playoff Odds Before Week 16: 87.6% Playoff Odds After Week 16: 100%.
Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6) – 45% chance to make playoffs. Assuming they get there.
If the Houston Texans win this weekend, this spot will belong to them. In this event, a Jets win would leave Denver as the 6 seed, while a Jets loss would put them fifth.
No. 3 seed: If the Broncos lose to Cincinnati on Monday and beat San Diego, they would be 11-5. All that’s left to determine is where they’ll be slotted. Heading into Kansas City to take on a lowly 1-5 team bereft of its start running back, Pittsburgh was knocked off then, and the Chiefs have not lost since.
If the Vikings win, they will definitely host the Seahawks on Wild Card Weekend. Given that their opponent is the New England Patriots, I expect them to play like it’s the Super Bowl. So despite a pretty bad season, the Ravens were able to sweep the rival Steelers and shut down their current playoff chances (which is pretty damn sweet).
The Chiefs’ (10-5) magical run to the playoffs can still end with an AFC West crown, but they need to win their final game and the Broncos to help them out by losing one of their remaining two games. The Texans could have clinched a strength of victory (SOV) tiebreaker over the Colts with a Bengals win on Monday night, but it was not to be. By my notes, they’ve been outplayed in five of their 10 victories this year, and their most impressive wins all came back in September. In the NFC, the six playoff qualifying teams are decided, but their seeding is still up in the air. Now, can they clinch a playoff spot today? In the weeks leading up to its only loss, Carolina gave up 38 points at New Orleans and 35 points at the Giants. If the Panthers win this Sunday, or if the Cardinals lose, they clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Those are all playoff teams. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6, 6-5, at CLE) 10.
Green Bay clinches the NFC North with a win or tie. Which Packers team shows up – the one that beat the Vikings in Minnesota, 30-13, or the one that just lost to the Cardinals, 38-8?

Somehow, the Colts (7-8) are still clinging to a possible postseason appearance, but it’s an insane order. The NFC has seemingly come down to a two-horse race between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals, with the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks still waiting in the weeds. Every player is dinged up at this point and teams can only play 46 players on a given week.
