49ers’ Colin Kaepernick done for season because of shoulder injury

Rehabilitation for such a procedure is likely four to six months, which could play into a key date on Kaepernick’s contract. Heretofore, York thought he and lead negotiator Paraag Marathe had pulled off the sweetest of team-friendly contracts when they signed Kaepernick to a so-called $126-million extension with a caveat: The 49ers basically could cut their losses, with minimal financial damage, if they traded or released him by April 1 of each year.

Kaepernick gave them control over the situation because he signed that deal-I kept saying I didn’t understand it; I kept saying the ONLY beneficiary was the Yorks’ pocketbooks (no big bonus).

Colin Kaepernick on IR means that Blaine Gabbert will face no competition for the starting quarterback job in San Francisco. Sunday’s game against Seattle will be a great opportunity for Gabbert to show the 49ers front office he is worth keeping beyond this year. Kaepernick self-reported the injury Monday, and when the soreness persisted Friday, he said he wanted to explore his options, team spokesman Bob Lange said. Now, the 49ers are looking at another tumultuous offseason that could be dominated by Kaepernick’s recovery from surgery set for this week.

The backslide began last season when the 49ers went 8-8.

On Friday, Kaepernick told the team after practice that the shoulder was not feeling any better. He practiced fully all week, though quarterbacks are off-limits from contact.

The team placed the quarterback on injured reserve Saturday with an injury to his left, non-throwing shoulder that could require surgery early next week.

The 49ers-Kaepernick partnership is over. Concerned that he was going to join the list of head coaches who only lasted a season in the National Football League, Jim Tomsula had to pull the trigger. His passer rating was 78.5, the lowest of his career.

After a disappointing start to the season, Kaepernick will finish with 1,615 yards and six touchdowns while adding 45 carries for 256 yards rushing and one touchdown on the ground in nine games.

Once again, when the 49ers get ready to dump somebody, they will always do it in the most awkward, self-defeating way possible.

Kaepernick has compiled a 27-20 record in regular-season starts. The Falcons certainly aren’t the defense that the Seahawks are and playing at home is a completely different environment than playing against the 13th man. If Gabbert is able to stay composed and use his weapons, the 49ers could stay competitive.
