The 49ers hired the former Eagles coach Thursday, finding the leader CEO Jed York is counting on to turn things around for his once-proud franchise.

“After a thorough search, Trent & I are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new #HeadCoach of the @49ers”, York wrote, referring to general manager Trent Baalke.

A statistical look at the 49ers’ hiring of Chip Kelly as head coach Thursday. Some of those players called Kelly out publicly. “Chip Kelly is a guy I want in the league”, Young said. With Kelly, it might be great, it might be disastrous, but at least we get to see what happens. “He had two 10 winning campaigns and then this last season was a disaster. That makes a difference”. “I know that’s the easy and convenient analysis after Chip Kelly’s hiring by the 49ers, but in this case there are too many connected dots to ignore”. That also was a complaint some players had of Jim Harbaugh after he and the 49ers parted ways following the 2014 season. And why not? No one would have been surprised at that point if Kaepernick had played his last game for the 49ers.

After Kelly was sacked by Philadelphia, former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho tweeted, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

Other loyal Kelly followers said they switched over to the Eagles when he was there, and will now switch again to the 49ers. It’s clear that Kelly has always been a fan of Kaepernick and Kaepernick had long been a rumored target for the Eagles in Philadelphia when Kelly was the coach there.

However, he was highly criticized for making certain personnel moves like trading LeSean McCoy an All-Pro at running back and sending Nick Foles a quarterback to St Louis for quarterback Sam Bradford. Kaepernick’s three-year run as the 49ers starter, including a Super Bowl appearance in the 2012 season, came to a halt at midseason when he got benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert.

Kaepernick is expected to be fully healed for the 2016 season.

You assuredly don’t hire Kelly if you think spending half of the 2015 season disparaging Colin Kaepernick to national reporters was the smartest thing ever.

Kelly will be filling his staff in coming days. Davis, the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, had the same job under Mike Nolan in 2005.
