49ers lose NT Ian Williams for season

Right tackle Anthony Davis returned to the 49ers’ 90-man roster on Saturday, but the roster spot that opened is a huge loss for the team. Davis was expected to report for Saturday’s opening of camp.

To make room for Davis, the 49ers placed starting nose tackle Ian Williams on the reserve/non-football injury list because of an ankle issue that required offseason surgery. It’s not known how Williams was injured in the offseason.

Davis applied for reinstatement Monday.

Originally the 11th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft by San Francisco, Davis started all 71 games in which he has appeared, as well as eight postseason contests from 2010-14.

Davis was listed at 6-foot-5 and 323 pounds in 2014.

Williams, who worked his way from being an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2011 to a starter, had 65 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 2015. He finished the 2015 campaign with 85 tackles; Pro Football Focus ranked the 26-year-old as the fourth-best interior lineman in the league over the span of the final six games.
