49ers president Paraag Marathe demoted

The Mercury News reports that Marathe is being removed from the president duties, in part because he’s believed to be the source of recent leaks to national reporters, including reports discrediting Colin Kaepernick.

Jed York has also operated as team president in the past-before he brought on minority owner Gideon Yu as team president and then when Yu left, the title passed to Marathe.

Even after his reassignment, Marathe will continue to manage the 49ers’ salary cap and remain as the team’s top contract negotiator.

The complete collapse of the San Francisco 49ers franchise over the last two seasons has led to another member of the organization falling on the sword.

However, Guido has begun taking over more of Marathe’s responsibilities inside the 49ers organization this season.

Marathe has long worked closely with general manager Trent Baalke and often sat next to him at games in the press box. He is not expected to retain the title of 49ers president, a source said. The soccer club has a proposal to build a new stadium in Sacramento and hopes to gain entry into Major League Soccer.

Before his appointment as president, Marathe was the chief operating officer for three years, supervising such aspects as business operations, production, marketing, ticketing and suites, and stadium operations. He became the 49ers chief contract negotiator in 2004.

Marathe has been with the 49ers for 15 years and has been York’s right-hand man since the latter took over day-to-day operations of the team nine years ago.

Marathe was named this year to Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 list.
