OK, it’s not like Kelly is choosing between Steve Young and Joe Montana in their primes. or even between a young, unburdened Kaepernick and a playoff-proven Alex Smith.

The post Kaepernick still not throwing as Gabbert, Driskel handle most workload appeared first on 49ers Hot Read.

Texans: “Knowing my family and friends are in the stands really supporting me, that was a dream come true”, said Anderson, who grew up in nearby San Jose.

On a day when Kaepernick sat out, Gabbert, Lewis and Driskel all said they made throws they wished they could have back.

“Chip doesn’t really share the science behind it, we just go out and try to execute as quickly as we possibly can”, McDonald said. “It wouldn’t have been fair to put him in and judge him on that competition”. The Vikings used the 32nd overall pick in 2014 on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who started 12 games as a rookie and all 16 last season. He also registered 296 rushing attempts for 833 yards and 10 touchdowns. While the offense was pretty vanilla, again Miller was one of the few to show out, breaking through arm tackles and running past people like they were standing still.

As for Gabbert, Kelly noted that he still needs to get a feel with the first-team offense. “I think the biggest thing about tonight is we did some really good things offensively and we know we have some things that we need to work on and grow and get better at”. In terms of tempo, I thought we did well. “Just a little shoulder soreness”.

“I don’t look at it as a leg up”, Kelly said. While he’d only get three more carriers it was clear the coaching staff saw all they needed to from him. “He says he feels better as we go, but we’re not going to push him so that we can make a proper evaluation of him”. While full details of the contract have not yet been released, there are those saying that it is simply a one-year deal.

They’ll play up-tempo, they’ll spread the field, they’ll do what Chip Kelly always wants to do. Of course, it would be hard to play worse than Gabbert did against the Texans’ first team defense who were without a bunch of their key players, namely J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney. Gabbert will “win” the starting job simply by being the lesser of two evils in the preseason and getting the benefit of the doubt as the incumbent.
