49ers trade cornerback Acker to Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers traded cornerback Kenneth Acker to the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed draft choice.

A sixth-round selection by the 49ers in 2014, Acker missed his rookie season because of a foot injury.

The 24-year-old bounced back to start 13 games for San Francisco in 2015, registering 63 tackles, eight passes defended and three interceptions.

The deal was announced on Saturday.

The 49ers now must reduce their roster from 89 players to 75 by Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Ultimately Acker had fallen out of favor with the 49ers and defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil this offseason. Tramaine Brock and Jimmie Ward are the projected starters, and top backups are Keith Reaser, Rashard Robinson, Chris Davis, Will Resmond and Dontae Johnson. The trade remains contingent on Acker passing a physical.

The Kansas City Chiefs have just traded for a cornerback. Later that year, the teams swapped disappointing first-round receivers with the 49ers getting Jon Baldwin in exchange for A.J. Jenkins.
