Watch England take on Pakistan in the fourth ODI at Headingley from 1.30pm on Thursday, live on Sky Sports 2.

Then Rashid signed off with the wicket of Azhar, whose hard work ended in anti-climax thanks to a tame chip to long-off from the final ball of the leg-spinner’s 10 overs.

But Stokes (69) and wicket-keeper Bairstow (61), only playing on his Yorkshire home ground after Jos Buttler was ruled out in the warm-up with a hamstring injury, got the innings back on track with a fifth-wicket partnership of 103.

England, meanwhile, are likely to rest fast bowler Chris Woakes to bring in all-rounder David Willey, who has recovered from a hand injury he picked during a NatWest Blast T20 match earlier this month.

Sharjeel Khan, who made a dashing 58 at Nottingham again looked in good touch as he pulled Jordan for four and flicked him over deep square for six. Imad Wasim returns having been injured for Trent Bridge, coming in for the experienced Shoaib Malik who has had a poor series, while Umar Gul, Mohammad Rizwan and Mohammad Irfan are drafted in. Willey and Jordan bowled three maidens in the first six overs.

In came giant paceman Mohammad Irfan, experienced seamer Umar Gul, batsman Mohammad Rizwan and Wasim.

The last ball of the innings saw wicket keeper Buttler, thrash Pakistan bowler Hasan Ali’s deliveryover extra-cover for four and ensure a record was set, much to the delight of capacity crowd of more than 17,000.

Azhar dug in for a 62-ball 50 containing four fours and two sixes, but it was increasingly clear there would be no repeat here of the power-hitting seen at Trent Bridge.

But wickets fell around him steadily, with a diving Plunkett holding an excellent catch at mid-on to dismiss potential dangerman Sarfraz Ahmed (12) following a hard-hit drive off Rashid.
