The U.S Geological Survey reported the quake struck at 7:57 p.m. Tuesday and its epicenter in rural Lake County, about 115 miles northwest of Sacramento. The quake had a depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.5 miles).

At 8:08 p.m. a 2.7 aftershock was recorded the same distance and roughly the same direction from Upper Lake.

The natural disaster was centered about 13 miles away from Upper Lake and about 14 miles from Nice.

Geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0 and that earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 are the smallest that can be felt by humans. There have been no reported injuries so far. “I actually heard the quake coming”, Ukiah resident Bailey Penzotti said.

No significant damage or injuries were immediately reported.

Under certain conditions, a temblor of that size is capable of causing considerable damage.
