Organizers said such peaceful gatherings are important not only to bring the Muslim community together, but to help combat recent anti-Islamic sentiments.

After prayers, many people visited markets around the mosque, buying beef, mutton, desserts and fruit.

It’s Eid al-Adha which means festival of sacrifice.

Obama said this year the holiday is also a reminder of the millions of refugees across the planet “who are spending this sacred holiday separated from their families, unsure of their future, but still hoping for a brighter tomorrow”.
