The winning ticket for Friday’s drawing was sold at a Speedway station along Interstate 70 in Cambridge City, a town of about 2,000 residents 50 miles east of Indianapolis.
The estimated $540 million jackpot is the third-largest in the history of the Mega Millions game. One willing ticket was sold in Indiana. The megaball number is 5.
As with all top Powerball and Mega Millions prizes, the full $540 million sticker price of Friday’s jackpot will only be paid out if all the winners opt to receive their winnings in 30 annual installments.
The previous Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot was $415 million, but after no winning ticket emerged, the jackpot jumped to $449 million on Tuesday.
Tickets are sold in 43 states. The jackpot grew for four months, having last been won on March 8 in Washington.
No word yet on where in Maryland the $1 million ticket was purchased.
“Coincidentally, the only two Mega Millions jackpots won this year were drawn on the eighth day of a month – January 8 and March 8”, the official Mega Millions website revealed.
