But losing weight is actually Hites’ second goal.

The bicyclist says that a combination of too much soda and lack of exercise led him to almost double that weight. His marriage was in shambles, he had lost his job, and his health was deteriorating because of his increasing weight.

A 254 kilogram man biking across the United States to lose weight hit a snag in Rhode Island.

To document his new journey, Eric Hites started the website FatGuyAcrossAmerica.com. “I have a lot to prove and a lot to make happen”.

Hites initially assumed his trip would take up to four months, but due to a minor setback involving a bent rim on his bicycle, he is now stuck in Tiverton – 90 miles from where he began his inspirational journey in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Eric Hites, a man attempting to change his life – and shed pounds – by bicycling across America, has been sidelined by a damaged bike.

“If not, I’m hooking up a rope to my trailer and making a harness and I’m just going to start pulling it until I can find a sponsor”, Hites said. He’s hopeful someone will hear his story and help him get a new bike so he can finish his journey and his transformation.
