6 killed in MI parking lot shootings; suspect arrested

A total of eight people were shot in three locations Saturday night as the gunman drove around shooting victims, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said.

Michigan State Police say the victims of the restaurant shooting were 62-year-old Mary Lou Nye, 60-year-old Mary Jo Nye, 68-year-old Barbara Hawthorne and 74-year-old Dorothy Brown, all of Battle Creek.

Then four people in two cars were shot and killed outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant a few miles away from the dealership, Matyas told WOOD.

On Sunday morning, Tammy George came outside to clean the parking lot.

After the almost six-hour rampage through Kalamazoo, Jason Dalton was arrested without incident. Four women in the vehicles were killed and a 14-year-old girl is reportedly alive but is in very serious condition.

“As we were leaving, we could see police cars and flashing lights just north of us”, ” she said, “but nothing more”.

The suspect was arrested about 12:40 a.m., authorities said.

Investigators found no links between Dalton and the victims.

Getting said he’s expecting Dalton will be charged with six counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and multiple gun felonies. The third victim was in critical condition early Sunday morning.

Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley said Dalton was being questioned, the Journal-News reported. After learning that he was an Uber driver who continued to take passengers during his shooting rampage, the ride-sharing company vowed to offer whatever help they could.

Dalton is set to be arraigned on Monday. An investigation into the shooting and any possible motive for Dalton’s alleged crimes are ongoing.

“There is no connection between any of them, this all appears to be random”, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.

At approximately 5:42 p.m. on Saturday, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Meadows Townhomes on G Avenue near Comstock for a woman who had been shot multiple times in the parking lot. They are looking for a dark blue or silver Chevrolet HHR.
