One person was killed and five others hurt Sunday night when gunfire erupted after a peace rally in Birmingham, Alabama, police said.

Police said up to 60 shots were fired, likely from multiple guns. The shooting broke out about an hour after a peace rally in the community’s Lewis Park closed, AL.com said.

“The events of tonight are disheartening and troubling”, Shelton said.

The assailant, or the motive behind the shooting, is yet to be determined – but residents spoke of their terror after gunshots rang out.
