Earlier this month police made a public appeal for information about Mr Amey’s whereabouts, saying they had grave concerns for his welfare after he failed to return home from a walk along Kewarra Beach.
The Cairns Post reported Garry Amey was due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court in November facing five charges.
Police have chosen not to comment on the charges.
“He was conscious, but obviously suffering signs of exposure, dehydrated and not quite right with his thoughts”, Supt Newton said of his condition.
Amey’s family is unable to explain what happened.
He was spotted at a beach on the day of his disappearance but refused help from two people who swam out to him.
His survival came as a shock to Mr Amey’s wife.
His wife, Arlene, said she never gave up hope her husband would be found alive but he had been been unable to explain what happened.
“I was very stunned and just went to the hospital straight away”, she said.
She said Mr Amey had been treated by a paramedic who was nearby at the beach.
Passers by pulled Garry Amey, 60, from the water at a beach north of Cairns on Sunday afternoon.
