6500 acres burned in Big Sur fire

The agency reports the Soberanes Fire, north of Big Sur, is approximately 14,897 acres in size and has destroyed 20 homes and two outbuildings. Now there are 1,400 firefighters on scene.

The Big Sur fire on Monday burned in Monterey County, south of Carmel, Calif., a popular tourist spot along the state’s northern coastline.

At least 1,500 homes remain evacuated in the Santa Clarita area, where 18 houses were gutted by fast-moving flames Saturday.

An American Red Cross shelter is open at Carmel Middle School at 4380 Carmel Valley Road for evacuees.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says more than 1,300 personnel are battling the fire burning in hard-to-reach, rugged mountainous terrain.

Cal Fire officials have expanded mandatory evacuation orders for residents living near a challenging wildfire named the Soberanes Fire that started Friday.

Estimates released Monday by Cal Fire show just five percent containment, with 1650 structures threatened.

In Salinas, Toro Regional Park is closed starting Sunday and is being used as as home base camp for Cal Fire crews.

One of the strike teams deployed is a San Francisco Fire Department team specially trained in protecting structures.

Carmel Highlands, Rancho San Carlos, White Rock and Rancho San Clemente are under a pre-evacuation warning and should be prepared to leave if a mandatory evacuation is ordered for their area.

Water-dropping aircraft resumed runs Sunday over the blaze that has blackened more than 34 square miles of dry brush on the edge of the Angeles National Forest. New evacuations were put in place Sunday as the blaze roared to the northeast through Angeles National Forest toward the city of Acton.
