7 square miles burn in Southern California

East of Los Angeles, favorable weather conditions helped efforts to contain the Pilot Fire in the San Bernardino Mountains, which had been fueled by drought-stricken vegetation and gusting winds.

Around 375 homes and properties were affected and thousands of residents have been told to evacuate along the Summit Valley area as well as in Hesperia.

– A brush fire is burning near Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County. As of Monday night, the blaze was only 6 percent contained, said Justin Taylor of the U.S. Forest Service.

The Apple Valley and Hesperia school district websites announced that all schools would be closed on August 9 because of the Pilot Fire, according to KTLA.

Three school districts in the area were closed due to poor air quality caused by smoke.

A wildfire burning in Southern California’s rugged San Bernardino Mountains has grown to more than 12 square miles, but it hasn’t reached any of the homes it has been threatening.

About 5,000 homes were under a voluntary evacuation advisory in Hesperia and nearby communities, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said.

The so-called Pilot Fire that scorched 7,861 acres since it ignited Sunday was 64 percent contained Wednesday, fire officials said.

Hesperia Unified schools will follow their normal full-day schedule, while Apple Valley Unified will be on an “early release” schedule for Thursday, and full-day schedule on Friday, according to statements from both districts. – Areas east of the Mojave River and south of Rock Springs Road to Kiowa Road. The American Red Cross has set up a reception and care center at Oak Hills High School and pet owners can bring their animals to the San Bernardino County Devore Animal Shelter.

Firefighters are nudging closer to full containment of a wildfire that has so far destroyed almost 12 square miles of land south of Los Angeles, authorities said Wednesday.

Firefighters continued to gain ground in the battle against the Pilot Fire overnight increasing containment to 70 percent, fire officials said Thursday. The number of people who left was not known.

Fifty-seven homes have been destroyed, and a bulldozer operator was killed in an accident while working on the fire.
