BEVERLY HILLS-Now the awards season has officially kicked off!

Sunday night, the winning actors and actresses were revealed for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards. The stars were out in full-force of the first possible predictor of how things could possibly turn out for the rest of the awards season.
Gervais returned to hosting duties this year after having presided from 2010 to 2012.
In what is probably the year’s most competitive category, best actress in a drama, Brie Larson won out over Cate Blanchett (“Carol”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn) for her affecting performance as a woman in captivity in “Room“. The actress was quite gracious while on the stage.
In an upset, “The Revenant” won best film, drama, as well as best director for Inarritu and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Everyone in attendance acknowledged the multiple Academy Award winner’s contribution to the industry with a standing ovation.
While Jim Carrey made his return to the public spotlight. He poked fun at Bruce Jenner now known as Caitlyn Jenner in comparison to himself and the female race. Out of its three nominations, The Martian bagged two, one for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the other one by Matt Damon for Best Actor in Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
As usual there were some big surprises at the Golden Globes. Inarritu’s movie “Birdman” won four Oscars last year including for best picture and best director, and many critics believe the Mexican director could emerge triumphant again this year.
Hollywood legend Denzel Washington earned the most prestigious award of the night-the Cecil B. DeMille Award-for his outstanding lifetime of contribution to the film fraternity.
The Supporting Actress Award was clinched by Kate Winslet for portraying the role of an assistant to Apple founder Steve Jobs in the film “Steve Jobs“.
Supporting Actress, Series, Limited Series or TV Movie: Maura Tierney, “The Affair“. “Mozart in the Jungle” won Best TV Comedy, and I think not many people have an idea what that show is about.
Actor, Limited Series or TV Movie: Oscar, Isaac, “Show Me a Hero”.
The big television winners included USA’s “Mr. Robot”, Taraji P. Henson for “Empire” and Jon Hamm for “Mad Men”.
Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl” and “Ex Machina”), Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie” and “Grandma”), Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation” and “Luther”) and Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies” and “Wolf Hall”) were all nominated for two Globes this year, but the dual bids didn’t help.
“I want to do this monologue and go into hiding”, he deadpanned. Actors in both shows – Christian Slater for “Mr. Robot” and Gabriel Garcia Bernal for “Mozart in the Jungle” – also won. Bit of a shocker there as he took the prize that seemed like a lock for Jeffrey Tambor.
Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul“, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”. It was definitely one of those acceptance speeches that ranked top-notch for the night.
Original Song: “Writing’s on the Wall” (music and lyrics by Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes), ‘Spectre‘.
Who would win the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama?
The Hollywood Foreign Press (who actually hand out the GG) are famous for recognizing new talent and generally making offbeat choices. To say it was “real” would be an understatement.
Actress, Musical or Comedy: Jennifer Lawrence, ‘Joy‘. So it was excellent news to us when he was brought back for the 2016 show, held yesterday, and contrary to the reports of a few pearl-clutching reviews from outlets like the New York Times, Gervais delivered.

Gervais’ snark aside, the Golden Globes have worked for years to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known global journalists. While the Globes rarely have an impact on Oscar predications as the voting bodies are completely different, I expect plenty of surprises come Thursday morning.
