74th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor

The stench and the heroism are what Jim Doyle remembers the most about that fateful day 74 years ago when Japan laid waste to Pearl Harbor, the attack that launched America into World War II.

Alfred Wagner, the son of a World War II veteran, attended the event on Monday and said he is glad to live in an area that has such high regards for their veterans.

With Monday marking the 74th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the 92-year-old Corpus Christi resident recalls what he saw that day with his own eyes.

“It’s just an honor for me to remember my father like this and all the veterans that defend our nation”, Dorris said. Ensign Langdell awoke on December 7 on Ford Island, an islet military airfield within the Pearl Harbor installation.

Which is why Governor Walker and others say Pearl Harbor – and the service and sacrifice of past and present military service members – must never be forgotten.

On Monday, the Alpena VFW honored the memory of that tragic day.

For more than two decades, San Pedro Harbor was the home port for numerous ships attacked at Pearl Harbor, including the battleships California, Pennsylvania and Arizona.

The event was held on a Navy pier overlooking the USS Arizona Memorial.

“It was so long ago”, said Meeks.

The survivors are not only surrounded by their loved ones, but also the 300 person crew of the USS Pearl Harbor.
