76ers sign first-round picks Simmons and Luwawu-Cabarrot

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons, the No. 1 pick in last month’s National Basketball Association draft, battled cramping in both legs during his summer league debut and needed assistance getting off the court in the fourth quarter of a 102-94 loss to the Boston Celtics.

By the time he was forced from the floor in the fourth quarter with a calf cramp, Simmons had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists to his name. “Those are the guys I have to be facing, so I have to get ready for them”.

“I respect everybody, but I don’t fear anyone”.

“Just getting my feet wet, so next game will be better”, Brown said on TV. They begin their Utah Jazz Summer League slate Monday versus the Boston Celtics at Vivint. Nearly immediately after, Ben Simmons took matters into his own hands driving to the basket and drawing a foul, which was far from an uncommon occurrence in the game. Hopefully, this is just cramping for Simmons and it’s worth mentioning he was able to put weight on his leg on his way off the court. The game’s a lot harder, a lot quicker.

Of course if you’re the number one pick in the NBA Draft, the hype train is going to follow you pretty much wherever you go.

“I think it went well”, Gielo told reporters following his workout with the 76ers.

Simmons scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and passed out five assists in his first on-court National Basketball Association action.

Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick in last month’s draft, announced the news on his Twitter account.

Although the LSU product missed seven of nine shots from the floor, he drained all six of his free-throw attempts. “It wasn’t about him”.

When I asked him how important was getting to the free throw line to his game, Brown said, “It’s everything”.

While the Sixers have Simmons and Luwawu-Cabarrot, plus four other talents who have played/are on the team now, Boston’s Summer League team is loaded with first and second-round picks Danny Ainge has drafted over the past three drafts. He will get acclimated to league play by playing for the Sixers’ summer league in Utah and Las Vegas.

Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, one of the Sixers’ other two first-round choices from the draft, also signed his rookie deal Saturday, which helped clear the way for both to join their 13 other summer league teammates for Sunday’s two-a-day.
