78-foot tree hoisted into place at Rockefeller Center

And as the years passed, the family grew and so did the tree, into a magnificent 78-foot beauty that just became the 2015 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

Almost 60 years ago the Asendorf family moved into a house with a small spruce tree in the front yard. But it’s pretty darn delightful that this year’s tree was lovingly tended to by four generations of the Asendorf family.

This year’s tree comes from the home of Albert Asendorf and Nancy Puchalski in Gardiner, NY. “So then I looked around and found out that Rockefeller Center might want the tree”, he told TODAY.

A 78-foot Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was raised up Friday.

The tree will remain lit and can be viewed until January 6, 2016.

“We submitted it online as more of a joke than anything but Rockefeller Center’s head gardener showed up at our door a few months after”, said Asendorf, a retired maintenance agent from SUNY New Paltz. “Now, it’s going to make the world happy”.

Many spectators that had gathered to watch the tree be installed said they were impressed by the size of spruce and excited to be able to watch it being set up.

The entire family will make their way to Rockefeller Center for the December 2 formal tree lighting ceremony. After the holiday season, the giant tree will be cut into pieces for providing wood for Habitat for Humanity.
