Tornadoes have now claimed eight lives in the Dallas area of north Texas, reported NBC Dallas Fort-Worth, quoting the police.
In the past week, at least 17 deaths in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas have been linked to the severe weather.
In Garland, Texas, a tornado touched down at 6.45pm (12.45am Sunday, GMT) on Saturday.
Reports of damage were confirmed in parts of Ellis County and the cities of Ovilla, Rowlett and Garland. A Christmas Tree stands among damage done to a home on Falcon Road in Selmer, Tenn., Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, after a tornado passed through the area Wednesday evening.
“There were no immediate confirmed numbers of injuries”.
Police officers in Garland are now trying to determine whether they were any other casualties at the crash site.
“We can’t get a good sense of it because it’s dark and it’s starting to rain right now”, he said.
“All of the street lights and highway lights are out”, he added.
Three other people died in Collin County, about 45 miles northeast of Dallas, according to sheriff’s deputy Chris Havey, although the circumstances were not immediately clear.
Feeding on unseasonably warm air, the storms and tornados have left a trail of destruction in rural communities from Alabama to IL.
The NWS corrected a precipitation report from Gadsden, Alabama, saying only 3.65 inches had fallen between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, not 20 inches as previously reported.
“The damage was… confined to approximately one square mile”, Birmingham Fire Department Chief Charles Gordon told CNN. I’m a teacher, and we have kids in this neighborhood and their houses are gone, and our house hasn’t been touched, I can’t believe it. I never even thought that I would live through something like this. It was unclear how the fifth victim died.
More severe weather was also in store for parts of Georgia and Tennessee that were again being pounded with rain.
The storms across the South have been unusually powerful for winter.
Another person was killed in Arkansas.
“I do know that they are going house to house and going through the apartments looking for people”, he said.
It warned of “blizzard conditions” from west Texas into Kansas, and “hazardous ice accumulations” in Oklahoma.
More than 30 tornado warnings had been issued across North Texas throughout the afternoon and evening.
