The other is why did the Academy shower its richest rewards on films so dark that some fans stay away out of fear they can’t bring themselves to watch?
Star Leonardo DiCaprio will vie for Best Actor, Alejandro G Inarritu is up for Best Director, Tom Hardy has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor and the movie will compete for Best Picture. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “The Martian” landed seven nominations, including best picture and best actor for Matt Damon, but, surprisingly, no best director nod for Scott.
Actor Eddie Redmayne, who won last year’s Oscar for best actor for his role in “The Theory of Everything”, has yet again been nominated in the Actor in a Leading Role category for playing a transgender in “The Danish Girl”. That’s an average of $75.8 million, one of the better showings in recent years and up 196 percent from last year’s dismal $25.6 million average at the time of the nominations. “Straight Outta Compton was very popular with Academy voters – I don’t know what happened there”.
The best actress category is the most fearsome this year, with Larson, who many feel is the front-runner, going head to head with Saoirse Ronan in “Brooklyn”, Cate Blanchett in “Carol”, Charlotte Rampling in “45 Years”, and 2013’s best actress victor Jennifer Lawrence in “Joy”.
Three people from Metro Vancouver have received Oscar nominations for the critically-acclaimed “The Revenant”.
Spotlight actress Rachel McAdams and Jennifer Jason Leigh also landed nominations in the category. The screenplay, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt”, garnered a best adapted screenplay nomination. The other nominees include “Room”, “Brooklyn” “The Big Short”, and “Bridge of Spies”.
Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio welcomed his latest Oscar acting nomination for “The Revenant”, saying the nod “feels great”.
Eight out of a possible 10 films were nominated for best picture. Cuaron went on to win the prize, while McQueen shared the best-picture award for Slaves. And two well-regarded films informed by the black experience – Creed and Straight Outta Compton – were snubbed in the best picture category. His stiffest competition is seen as Mark Rylance, best known for his stage work, for “Bridge of Spies”.
“Action needs to be taken to make sure that the industry as a whole is more inclusive with the hiring and the mentoring and the promoting of diverse product and diversity among filmmakers”, said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who is black.
