9 hurt as train derails, car plunges into California creek

A large tree that had fallen onto the tracks caused a San Francisco Bay Area commuter train to derail Monday night, in an incident that sent nine passengers to the hospital – four of them with serious injuries.

“It is absolutely a miracle that nobody was killed”, Kelly said. Between five and 10 other people suffered injuries, officials said.

ACE train No. 10 traveling from San Jose to Stockton derailed around 7:30 p.m.in Niles Canyon near Palomares Rd. after a mudslide blocked part of the tracks, officials confirmed Tuesday morning.

Images posted on Twitter by Alameda County Fire showed the vehicle on its side about half-submerged in the creek water.

The first auto was carrying six passengers and one crew member when it fell into Alameda Creek, Walker said.

Passenger Rich Howell was in the second vehicle.

A train derailed and one train vehicle crashed into a Sunol creek Monday evening. That vehicle landed in Alameda Creek, and a second rail auto derailed but remained upright, Walker said.

In a statement, ACE says: “We are working with our partners to restore service as soon as possible pending a complete investigation and assurance that the tracks are safe”.

KNTV reports (http://bit.ly/21jd6Fx) all Altamont Corridor Express trains traveling from Silicon Valley to the Central Valley were canceled on Tuesday.

The ACE train was traveling from San Jose to Stockton, according to its website.

After the passengers were evacuated, they were checked by paramedics. The uninjured riders were transported to the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, the department said. Railway officials said after the derailment that there will be no ACE train service Tuesday.

Officials say it was raining heavily in the area at the time of the accident.
