It was McCann’s third homer of the year and his first since May 21, when the Detroit catcher went deep in the 11th inning to beat Houston. “The guy can hit”. Following a two-run single by Bryan Holaday to make it an 8-7 game, the Tigers appeared to be in a great position to at least tie the game with Ian Kinsler at the plate.

“An 0-2 pitch, I was just looking for something up”, McCann said. “You know what I’m saying?” Showing his impatience, Kinsler popped up on the first pitch from Robertson and effectively ended the game. The last player to do that was Tim Salmon of the California Angels, as stated by STATS.

For his part, Martinez said he understood Ausmus removing him from the game.

As it happened, the Tigers did not score in the ninth, but they mounted a rally in the 10th, and Martinez’s spot in the lineup came up with the bases loaded. Castellanos singled to center, J.Martinez to second. Cabrera followed by launching his solo shot halfway up the seats in left-center. Anibal Sanchez provided the Tigers with seven innings of four-run ball. He struck out five. Av.Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to left fielder Cespedes, Abreu scored.

Eaton hit Simon’s second pitch of the game for a home run to right, his second career leadoff homer. He scored on Garcia’s single, and Adam LaRoche added a sacrifice fly.

“He’s put very consistent swings on the ball in the last few weeks”, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Price had a shaky outing, but it was the offense that, silent through seven innings, bounced back in a huge way and saved the game. He was able to throw 117 pitches in a 7-2 loss to the New York Yankees on June 19th. “To me, mostly, it was pretty straightforward”, Ausmus said the afternoon after. Then you guys are going come (and say), ‘A double gets him in. “So it’s kind of one of those things right now where I can’t explain it”.

Price said he’d take the blame for the confusion. The Nationals right-hander allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings. I never got to see Robin Ventura actually play because I was too young, but from what my father told me he always hustled, grinded, and gave his best out there. Especially not when he can’t get batters out on favorable counts, gave up a homer, and disappeared for the seventh inning. Then you’ve got someone who’s more of a singles hitter.

Both teams fiddled with their rotations as the result of the unexpected off-day, especially with each club being off Monday.

A nice break for the White Sox pitchers, who saw Cabrera rip three doubles in Detroit’s 5-4 win Friday night. He has a 5.27 ERA and a 1.566 WHIP in 23 career starts against Detroit. Santana’s homer enabled the 2014 AL Cy Young Award victor to avoid losing a fifth straight start and absorbing his 10th defeat of the season.
