Argentine man accused of locking wife, autistic son in cage

Police in Argentina have charged a 66-year-old man who they say kept his wife and adult son locked up in a dungeon for several years.

Police acting on a tip from relatives of the family raided the house in the Argentine beach resort of Mar del Plata and arrested Oviedo.

Old mattresses, rubble, bags of poo and used syringes were reportedly found inside.

“The house also had a room in the worst of human conditions where the woman and son spent the hours of the night”, locked up as well, he said.

Oviedo’s 61-year-old spouse, who is claimed to have been struggling type psychological well being points, and his son, 32, who has autism, are stated to have been ate up pet food and gasoline.

Oviedo was arrested on Friday and brought before a judge on Saturday. He will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and is being held at Bataan N Penal Unit 44.

His wife is 61 and son is 32.

Prosecutor Alejandro Pellegrini said police acted after two of Oviedo’s other children told authorities about his treatment of their brother and the woman. But eventually they reported him.

His victims are in hospital and it is unknown just how long he kept them captive is such squalid conditions.

One of Oviedo’s daughters-in-law described him as a violent man who often made threats, the judicial source said.

If convicted the accused faces 15 years imprisonment, however due to Oviedo “aggravating circumstances” his penalty may be increased to life.
