A bullet struck Gabay, 43, within the head.

After the incident, which happened at about 3:40 a.m., Mr. Gabay was taken to Kings County Hospital Center, where police said he was in critical condition, with no brain activity.

Gabay is a Harvard-educated attorney who was focused on bettering his community, Cuomo said in a statement.

“Carey is a friend to all who have the pleasure of meeting him”, he said.

He supports stronger gun laws on the federal level and called Gabay’s shooting “the latest heartbreaking reminder that the crime of gun violence must stop”.

Police believe the shooting near Prospect Park in Brooklyn was between rival gangs. No one has been arrested in any of Monday’s violence, the newspaper said.

According to ABC 7, the NYPD says around 2 a.m., a 24-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the torso, while a 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks.

The New York Police Department has offered a $12,500 reward for information about the shooting as investigators examine forensics and surveillance footage.

The pair had been walking back from a pre-parade party celebrating West Indian Day.

Gabay and his wife, Trenelle, are expecting their first child, Cuomo said, adding he is “so handsome, so giving, so kind”. “There’s not a thing I can say, and there’s nothing I can do”.

In a statement, Gabay’s family said he was in a coma and “surrounded by his loved ones” at a Brooklyn hospital. “And sometimes it just hurts”, he said. The family was heading for the annual street celebration of J’ouvert, or West Indian American Day, which is accompanied by a colorful parade featuring colorful costumes and dancers. Last year, a man recently released from prison shot into the crowd that killed one man wounded others.

In 2013, a one-year-old boy sitting in his stroller was killed by a bullet meant for his father. “It does me no good if we have the right laws in place in New York, but the guns are coming in from New Jersey, or from Virginia, or from Mississippi, or from any state down south. We need a national gun control policy”.

“I’m from Jamaica, my kids were born here and have never been there before so this is a taste of their culture to have the experience and get a feel of what the Caribbean is like”, one paradegoer said.
