Jawbone UP3 and UP2 get a major update and new designs

When Jawbone rolled out its latest generation of fitness trackers, the UP2 and UP3, they ditched the physical button of the UP24 and replaced it with a temperamental touch interface to switch between step and sleep tracking modes.

And finally, there a range of new colours for both devices and a new, more jewelry-inspired strap design for the UP2.

The higher end Jawbone UP3 comes with all the features of the UP2 and adds in a heart-rate sensor as well as sophisticated bioimpedance sensors and skin and ambient temperature sensors as well. There are loads more colours to choose from too, including Turquoise Circle, Oat Spectrum, Gunmetal Hex, Orchid Circle and Black Diamond for the UP2 and Indigo Twist, Ruby Cross, Sand Twist and Teal Cross for the UP3.

The updates released Tuesday will help resolve some of the problems users have experienced with the Up2, Up3 and Up4, wrote Mimi Huggins, Jawbone’s public relations manager, in an email.

In order to keep up with the competition, fitness tracker Jawbone now knows when you’re asleep, doing away with the pesky feature of needing to set it yourself to the right mode when you’re resting.

Other than the automatic sleep tracking capability, the new software update also brings “passive heart rate monitoring” to the Up3 and Up4 bands; thereby enabling them to monitor the users’ heart rate when asked. We’ve been running the features in this updated through a public beta for 3.5 months and we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback and new ideas from all of this.

The redesigned UP2 with its new colors are available starting today with a price tag of $99.99. The UP2 retails for £90 and UP3 £130 in the UK.

San Francisco, California-based Jawbone has over 1,000 patents (granted and pending) related to wearable devices and is the creator behind UP by Jawbone app that offers fitness and activity tracking features for Android smartphones and Apple iPhones.

The Up3 is now available for $180 in red, navy blue, white and green.

As well as software, Jawbone is focusing on hardware. The UP app is powered by Smart Coach – Jawbone’s intelligent coaching system which turns data into personalised guidance, giving user’s actionable insights and challenges to help improve their sleep, activity and diet.
