Mr Mieraili has confessed to handing a backpack to the suspected bomber at Bangkok’s main railway station shortly before the blast, Thai police say.

Since investigations began into the August 17 blast, authorities have arrested two foreign suspects and have issued 11 arrests warrants.

The Erawan Shrine is especially popular with Chinese tourists, feeding the idea that it could be a target for people who believe the Uighurs are oppressed by China’s government.

One of many suspects of final month’s lethal bombing in Bangkok has admitted to a cost of possessing explosives, Thai police stated Monday.

Prawut said the perpetrators may have been human traffickers and the Chinese passport used by one suspect, which gave the western region of Xinjiang as birthplace, was likely to be genuine.

“Yusufu said the backpack that he carried was heavy and it was a bomb”, he said.

Investigators have from the outset been focusing on a yellow-shirted man caught on security camera placing a rucksack at the shrine before the explosion.

Police said all the suspects linked to the deadly bomb blast, including the two men arrested so far, will face trial in Thailand’s civilian criminal courts and not a military court, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has said. Mieraili was arrested during a raid at a residence in east Bangkok late last month during which an assortment of bombmaking equipment and fake travel documents were also seized.

Any confirmation that Mr Mieraili is Chinese would throw the spotlight on an ethnic conflict that China has long argued poses an worldwide threat, the BBC’s Jon Sudworth in Beijing recently reported.

Thai authorities have said they would turn over the two passports to the relevant embassies to confirm their authenticity once forensics testing is completed. That man, whom police have identified as Adem Karadak, was transferred to police custody Friday after almost a week in military custody.

He added that police did not believe everything the suspects said, as it was also necessary to verify their information with available scientific evidence.

The two men were detained when a team of police and soldiers raided the Maimuna Garden Home Apartment building in Min Buri district for the second time on Sunday evening, the Bangkok Post reported.
