Kaya Scodelario found the Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials shoot hard

The movie doesn’t stand still at all here, with Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) quickly realising things might be a little more sinister than they seem on the surface. This is Quiznos first partnership with a major motion picture studio and movie release. Presently we just have more friends, and they’ve come into the group really nicely.

Maybe the threat of imminent death would be a good motivator but, then again, it could be sweet release when the alternative is to drag yourself across so much goddamn sand. They try their best with a small selection of shoehorned jokes, but there’s not the snappy verbal sparring you might hope for with this many talented actors on display.

Not at all. [Laughs] Making movies is tough, period. “One of the most nerve-wracking things a person can do is to take on a character that is part of such a beloved book series, and I’m fortunate enough to be part of two different interpretations of different book franchises”, McNamara told.

Where does Thomas go in this film? The kids may be out of the maze but they don’t stop running here. It’s a cool concept to play with. For a former child star, he has none of that spoilt-brat vibe or even world-weariness you would expect, coming across instead as humble and down-to-earth. I think it’s all his fault.

With all these changes being introduced, it’s understandable that fans of the series fear that the story and character development may be overlooked in place of action. We have to trust them instantly, and we have to like them instantly, and we have to root for them instantly.

“As an Asian-American actor, I don’t often get the opportunity to play the alpha male, this kind of masculine, strong Asian character”, he says. It’s going to be much deeper and hopefully more profound and mature. It’s Brenda and Jorge (Rosa Salazar and Giancarlo Esposito, both excellent) that really get a chance to breathe, and impose themselves on the movie. Because – on screen at least – Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials just kicked your over-hyped arse.

Why do you think there’s such a trend towards dystopian sci-fi? “It was so interesting to work with him and find what the camera likes”, he revealed. Wes Ball’s propulsive and refreshingly unsentimental chase through a diabolical labyrinth killed off main characters in a clinical fashion and cleverly negated the need for back stories by burdening the teenage runners with amnesia.
