John McEnroe hails Serena Williams as greatest of all time

Tennis player Serena Williams had little patience for questions after she won her quarterfinal match in the U.S. Open, especially after a male reporter asked her why she wasn’t smiling.

Women’s tennis world No 1 Serena Williams is two matches away from claiming a calendar-year Grand Slam.

The pressure is on Serena as she seeks to win a historic Grand Slam, with the American facing the prospect of playing the semi-final and final in consecutive days after rain stopped play at Flushing Meadows on Thursday.

Halep and Pennetta begin play Friday, followed by Williams and Vinci.

They played for a half-hour, with Groenefeld and Vandeweghe leading 4-3 when the match was halted.

“I love that I’m a full woman and I am strong, and I’m powerful, and I’m lovely at the same time, and there’s nothing wrong like that”, she said.

This the first time in the Open era that two Italian women reached the semifinals at the same major tournament. That is to say, the Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open and US Open.

“I still think of her as Serena”. Her current total of 21 Grand Slam singles titles is third on the all-time list behind Margaret Court (24) and Steffi Graf (22). Pennetta defeated No.2 seed Simona Halep on Friday.

For Richard Williams, who moved his young family from Michigan to the city of Compton in the early 1980s, the problem of racism in society has been a constant factor as his daughters Serena and Venus have grown into tennis champions. Pennetta, fit and focused, took advantage, made Kvitova run, hit one more ball – and one more after that. Serena often likes to let me know that if it wasn’t for me, she wouldn’t be where she is. And hers. So she responded blisteringly, and put everyone in their place – a fierce reminder that you don’t have to reluctantly grin, ignore them, or look at the floor.

Model and actor Cara Delevingne was called out for her apparent lack of enthusiasm during a Good Day Sacramento interview about her upcoming film Paper Towns.

As for Williams, she opted to focus her post-match thoughts on her recovery from injury and illness by saying: “Six months ago in the hospital I couldn’t even stand up, but thanks to my parents and sisters and everyone else I’m here”.
