Yankees put away Red Sox with big inning as Henry Owens struggles

“So we took advantage of the situation and it was big”. Toronto’s Edwin Encarnacion extended his hitting streak to 26 games.

Rick Porcello tossed his second gem in as many starts for the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on Tuesday night.

Cook wasn’t much better as he allowed four runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work, including two home runs. Pablo Sandoval popped out to the catcher to end the inning.

Facing a team now in the postseason for the fourth time in six big league starts, Henry Owens was due for a stinker. A pair of home runs gave the Red Sox their leads as Betts’ two-run blast in the third landed in the Green Monster seats and Ortiz’s go-ahead solo shot barely cleared the wall in left an inning later.

2006 – Ryan Howard homered in his first three at-bats, leading Philadelphia to an 8-7 victory over Atlanta in the first game of a doubleheader. Andrus stole home to cap the Rangers’ four-run seventh.

Xander Bogaerts had three hits, including a homer, and Blake Swihart had two hits and two walks for Boston. But do the Red Sox really want to mess with success? Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran and third baseman Chase Headley each had one RBI. However, David Ortiz would hit a ground-rule double to score Betts and make it 1-0.

“We’re going to be forced to see what we’ve got further with Greg (Bird)”, general manager Brian Cashman told MLB’s official website, “and when we’re up against some left-handed pitching, (manager Joe Girardi’s) going to be forced to look for some lineup flexibility”. Matt Shoemaker pitched Los Angeles to just its third win in 12 games. The real point is, neither of them should have had to be used in a game like this. Owens picked up a 6-4 win at the Mets with two runs plated (one earned) on five hits and four BB over five innings. He posted six saves and a 7.04 ERA in 2012 and went 3-1 with eight saves and a 3.77 ERA in 2013.

Milwaukee’s offense made things easy for Nelson, getting an early jump on right-hander Gerrit Cole, who lasted a career-low four innings.

Indians 4, Blue Jays 2: Jerry Sands singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh, Danny Salazar struck out 10, and Cleveland won its sixth straight. He’s hit 14 since the All-Star break. He guided the Marlins for one year and is in eighth season with New York.

The Yankees are coming into this game after allowing zero walks during their last outing. It turns out to be some hitting sensation named Stephen Drew. The first game in the series the Yankees could not pull it out. Phil Gosselin led the Diamondbacks with a three-run homer and an RBI double. Gregorious singled, Drew doubled and Brett Gardner walked to load the bases. The Red Sox added at least a run in every frame from the fifth inning on, but it was never enough. Cuban defector Hector Olivera went 0-for-4 with a strikeout for the Braves in his major league debut. It landed about 10-15 feet to the right of three new changeable white numbers on signs with red trim that were affixed to the stanchion of a light tower, signifying his countdown to 500. Both players were sent home from Tampa Bay after experiencing symptoms over the weekend.
