Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Host Tulane Green Wave

Thomas got a chance to shine after playing only the first quarter in a 69-6 win over Alcorn State to open the season.

It’s hard to get a real read on the rotation. “If Georgia Tech wins, we’re all happy”. Well, the Tulane football season did not start the best way the Green Wave had hoped it will, falling to Duke 37-7 at home last week. In the Wednesday ACC teleconference, coach Paul Johnson identified Monroe (and linebacker Nico Marley) when asked what stood out to him when watching Tulane’s game video, calling him “a very good player”. “Our kids aren’t as mature as they will be and I want them to be right now”. The Yellow Jackets are also 4-1 against the number in their last five non-conference games.

This time, they won’t have such an emotional edge.

Finally, someone paid attention to the Georgia Tech defense. Patrick Skov, a transfer known mostly for his blocking when he played at Stanford, rushed for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Marshall, the younger brother of University of Georgia senior Keith Marshall, ran for 184 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns, runs of 49 and 64 yards. He should be well-rested after playing only the first quarter against Alcorn State, throwing for one touchdown and running for another. The Georgia Tech offense rushed for 476 yards in the game, while totaling over 500 yards of total offense.

Unsung hero: Thomas’ nice day allowed redshirt freshman quarterback Matthew Jordan to see some extended time, and he delivered when called upon.

Thomas accounted for 168 offensive yards and three touchdowns in No. 15 Georgia Tech’s 65-7 victory over Tulane on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Safeties typically play a key role in defending Tech’s spread-option offense, often coming down into the box to help contain the run. Georgia Tech was a 33-point favorite in most Las Vegas sportsbooks.

But that was against an FCS program, Alcorn State. The first-teamers are likely to get more playing time against Tulane, if for no other reason than to tune up for a game at No. 9 Notre Dame the following week.
