The LAPD Gets A Tesla Model S P85D And A BMW i3
The Los Angeles police department has unveiled it’s latest tool in the fight against a crime – a tiny electric powered BMW police vehicle.

Both are painted in the LAPD’s black and white livery, first made famous on TV shows like Dragnet and Adam-12, with the iconic “to protect and to serve” slogan on the doors. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADPW) and General Services Department will lease an additional 128 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
The other advantage is the decline of reliance to gas required to operate them – zero for the totally electric vehicles, which is a gain for the taxpayers and a redistribution of income to infrastructure upgrades (which are not definitely named in the press release of the mayor).
The information comes from LAPD Blog, which reports that under this, half of LA’s light-duty vehicle purchases will be electric by 2017.
When completed, the LAPD will be home to more than 126 electric cars, including 23 electric scooters and 3 electric motorcycles already in the fleet.
City officials like Garcetti have also urged police to build stronger relationships with the community and work with community groups, leaders and clergy.
“EVs make environmental and economic sense to the City of Los Angeles, and LADWP is pleased to support the Mayor’s goal to have EVs become the majority of our fleet”, said LADWP General Manager Marcie Edwards.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the LAPD will lease 160 battery EV vehicles, giving Los Angeles the largest pure EV fleet in the country.
“Today, we take another step toward becoming the most sustainable city in America”, Garcetti said in a statement.
Consumers are also switching their cars to electric ones.
He said he has met with police, gang intervention workers and Mayor Eric Garcetti “about an appropriate response to the killings”.

It was also announced Friday that Tesla and BMW will be loaning cars to the police department to test drive.
