Shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday, more than 50 Sheriff’s squad cars and other law enforcement vehicles traveled from McHenry to Woodstock via Route 120 with their lights on and sirens off. A police source said they were bringing Maness’ body to the morgue.
The incident started after Peters’ wife called a friend in Michigan, who then called the sheriff’s office asking for someone to check on the wife’s well-being, a McHenry County prosecutor said. The third deputy returned fire while Maness was pulled to safety.

A McHenry County sheriff’s deputy who was shot while on duty in northwest suburban Holiday Hills previous year has died.
Deputy Dwight Maness, 47, of McHenry, died Monday, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, which provided no other details.
Maness was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office for seven years.
On that night, he and partner Deputy Khalia Satkiewicz responded to a well-being check at a Holiday Hills home. He was also looking forward to riding his motorcycle again. Shooter Scott B. Peters fired more than a dozen rounds through the front door as he yelled: “Airborne!”
McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim released a statement saying, “I had a conversation with him about a week ago, and he was enthusiastic about regaining his strength and returning to patrol”. “This news is devastating”. Satkiewicz also survived, and both deputies received the county’s first and only Purple Hearts from the Sheriff’s Office. Peters is current serving 135 years for attempted murder.
If the coroner determines that Maness’ death was a result of the injuries he sustained in a October 16, 2014, shooting, the man who shot him could face murder charges, State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi said.

Majewski did not offer a time frame for when the manner of death determination will be made, only that it will be conducted in the “future”.
