The King of Fighters XIV resurrects a classic fighting game in 3D

King of Fighters XIV is official and the big news is that the developers opt for 3D graphics once again, despite a long tradition with highly-detailed 2D characters and backgrounds in King of Fighters. Whereas 2D art is typically used in the series, the 2004 spinoff game The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact did feature some 3D graphics. The game will be the successor to the king of fighters XIII which was launched in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Windows PC. It was also announced for the PS4, though it is still unclear whether the game will be out for other platforms as well.
King of Fighters 14 is going to be released across Japan in January next year, no additional details about the title were revealed during the press conference. The trailer somehow indicated that the game will be releasing on the PlayStation 4.

Once a fierce competitor to Capcom’s Street Fighter series in the mid-’90s, SNK’s team-based fighting game franchise The King of Fighters will shift to 3D for its latest sequel launching for the PlayStation 4 in 2016. In the meantime we can make do with the in-game screenshots.
