Monmouth County sprayed pesticides to kill mosquitoes on September 9 in the West Belmar section of Wall and in Spring Lake Heights once it received confirmation of the human case of West Nile virus, county spokeswoman Laura Kirkpatrick said.
“It’s a good reminder for people to take those steps for further protection”, she said.

“This is very unfortunate, and though not common, we do know that people can die from West Nile Virus infection”, said Dr. Howard Haft, the state’s deputy secretary of public health, in a statement. Remove any standing water around yards and houses by emptying planters, wading pools, trash and recycling bins, and other places where water might accumulate to reduce mosquito breeding.

To prevent mosquito bites, residents are advised to use an insect repellent containing at least 30 percent DEET (lower concentration for children) and stay indoors at dawn and dusk.
